Robert W. Thorpe has over forty years of experience in the planning and land economics field, and is the Principal-in-Charge of R.W. Thorpe & Associates, Inc., an urban and regional planning firm headquartered on Mercer Island, Washington, with branch offices in Anchorage, Denver, and Winthrop, Washington. A Certified Planner, he has served as Contract City Planner/SEPA Responsible Official for several communities.

Mr. Thorpe is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association, and is Past President of the Puget Sound Chapter of the American Planning Association. He serves on a variety of industry Professional Boards, including ULI, NAHB and Master Builders.

Before founding RWT/A, Mr. Thorpe was instrumental in developing many innovative planning programs with the City of Mercer Island and two large engineering/planning consulting firms. This included the development of implementation tools such as SEPA Guidelines, Shorelines Management Program, Design Commission Guidelines, Zoning Codes, Master Planned Communities, and more.

Mr. Thorpe has been a candidate for the MAI (Appraisal) designation, combining land economics with design and planning, as well as land use/feasibility. He is an Instructor in urban planning and the development process at several universities and community colleges, and is certified by the State of Washington to teach the first three steps of Highest & Best Use (Most Probable Use) for real estate appraisal.

Mr. Thorpe has earned a dual Masters Degree in Urban Planning and Urban Development Economics from the University of Washington, along with a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics, with a minor in Architecture, from the University of Nebraska. He is a qualified expert witness in several jurisdictions and state/federal courts throughout Washington, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Nebraska, and Wyoming.
